Ways to become a citizen of Panama
The following are the three options you have to obtain Panama citizenship:
-
Citizenship by Birth
In accordance with the provisions of Article 9 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Panama, those individuals who meet any of the following criteria are recognized as Panamanian citizens by birth:
- A) Were born in Panamanian Territory (ius soli).
- B) Children of Panamanian parents by birth who were born abroad, who establish their residence in Panama (ius sanguini).
- C) Children of Panamanian parents by naturalization who were born abroad, who establish their residence in Panama and make the application no later than one year after reaching the age of majority.
-
Citizenship by Naturalization
Foreigners with permanent residence in Panama may apply for Panamanian citizenship through the naturalization process, provided they meet certain requirements established by the country’s legislation.
The main criteria are to demonstrate their integration into Panamanian society and to have completed a period of continuous legal residence. The latter varies according to the type of visa or immigration program under which the residency was obtained. In most cases, this period ranges between 5 and 3 years, although there are exceptions for citizens of certain countries with special treaties, who may apply in less time.

Citizenship For Zonians
This category is intended for Americans born in the former Panama Canal Zone between 1904 and 1979. This option was created because during that period, before the abolition of the U.S. administration over the Canal, people born in that Panamanian territory received U.S. citizenship.
In order to apply for this Panama citizenship program, applicants must have a birth certificate issued by the Office of Vital Records of the Department of State in Washington, D.C., which must be presented with an apostille.

Panama citizenship by investment
Although it is not possible to directly receive Panama citizenship by investment, the country does have residency options for investors that can lead to naturalization over time. Through some programs, foreigners can obtain permanent residency by making investments in real estate, environmental projects, bank deposits or businesses in the country.
This path allows those who invest in Panama not only to enjoy its tax and economic benefits, but also, in 5 to 3 years depending on the case, to apply for citizenship by naturalization and obtain a Panama passport.

F.A.Q. about Panama citizenship
A: The requirements to apply for Panama citizenship depend on the program to which you apply, whether by birth, naturalization or for zonians.
A: Although, upon acquiring Panamanian citizenship, you must declare that you will abide by the Constitution of the Republic of Panama and renounce all civil and political ties with your country of origin, some countries consider that this oath does not imply the automatic loss of your nationality of origin, unless you present a formal renunciation before the authorities of that country. We recommend checking the specific laws of your country of origin.
A: No, Panama does not have citizenship programs related to investment. However, there are other alternatives that can lead to Panamanian residency, with which you may be eligible for citizenship by naturalization, subsequently.
